Middlebury Skiing Goes Green To Ensure White September 28, 2006
In the wake of a miserable eastern winter, the Middlebury Nordic Team has taken steps to keep Vermont skiing cool. Working with Charlotte, VT based Native Energy, a privately held Native American energy company with a mission to support renewable energy projects that create social, economic, and environmental benefits, the Middlebury ski teams have offset the environmental costs of their travel and competition. Thomas Hand, an energy expert at Native Energy, and a recent graduate of the college was pleased with the partnership saying,
"NativeEnergy is excited to help the Middlebury Ski team be leaders not only
on snow but in helping to preserve skiing in Vermont by supporting new
renewable energy projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Not only is the Middlebury ski team out winning races, they are also leaders
in the fight against global warming. Native Energy is proud to work with
these athletes to help build new renewable energy projects that will help
preserve the skiing experience we all enjoy."
The moneys paid out by the ski teams will be directly used to support wind-driven local energy creation effectively removing 108.2 short tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.
"I'm thrilled at not only the social benefit this gives us as a team," explained head nordic coach Andrew Gardner, "but I believe there is a competitive advantage to knowing we aren't causing any further global warming as a team." Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature , and faculty affiliate for the ski team added, "Nordic skiing is the world's most complete sport--and also the one most vulnerable to the rapid changes in climate we're now causing on this planet. Three cheers to Middlebury for taking the lead in making its ski program carbon-neutral, and helping to keep us all kicking and gliding far into the future" W

What is all this fun you're having? Newell, where the heck are you these days?! 10/3/06, from Savage
Fantastic ski team site! Middlebury continues to lead on the sustainability front. As an alum of both the college and the team I could not be more proud. 10/3/06, from Peter Newell
Ruthie- thanks for the offer to contribute but the team's travel is entirely offset by this project. The best green support is to offset travel to and from college if you are traveling great distances. Contact Thomas at Native Energy for more. 10/1/06, from Andrew Gardner
Many thanks to Andrew and to Thomas for getting this going. It's something we should have done long ago--let's hope it spreads across the nordic community, and that it breds enough good karma to get us a little snow this year! 10/1/06, from Bill
Thank you for working with NativeEnergy! I would like to contribute by buying Green Tabs from NativeEnergy to help off set team travel and hope other parents will join me. It is so easy, just go on to the NativeEnergy website and make your contributions. Simon Thomas-Train gave Al and me a gift this summer of Green Tabs to help off set our car travels. Now we have been inspired to give it as a gift to others. Thanks Andrew for being so innovative! 9/29/06, from Ruthie
Is that Thomas Hand at Two Brothers Tavern? I'm not sure those brews he was throwing back were carbon neutral.... 9/29/06, from Timmy
